The Heretic

I stopped posting again. Mea culpa.

  • I am delighted to see the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. My hope is that this will not only be a boon for the rights of our GLBTQ troops, but will also energize the gay rights movement throughout the country. This is a great day for America.

In spite of its passing, though, Obama’s support continues to lag among liberals which is utterly baffling. With the repeal of DADT, the list of long wished-after liberal accomplishments of this Congress and President grows even longer. I get that libs are upset about the tax deal, but that is delusional. The man’s hands are tied. I would suggest that repealing DADT before the midterms would have been better in terms of energizing the base, but somehow the persnickety nature if people on the Left endures so it probably wouldn’t have mattered. For the Dems, the next two years are going to be about wandering through the wilderness. If they are to have any hope of coming out alive on the other side in 2012, they are going to have to do some soul-searching and find some team spirit.

The man deserves a break. His base at the very least should be able to give him that. (On the bright side, his standing is finally improving with moderates and moderate Republicans).

  • Dems are rightfully freaking out about the news from the Census Bureau. I am as sad as anyone about the further decline of the Rust Belt, my spiritual home, but am at the very least glad to see my home state hold the line. I would make just one comment to my friends on the Left. While the news seems bad on its face, I would not scream that the sky is falling just yet. Although most of the growth came in red states, a lot of it can be attributed to the growing Hispanic population in those states, a group that the Republicans have burned their bridge with in recent years. Republican state legislatures will try to gerrymander it so that the Hispanic voice is muted, but this seems to be one of those run-but-can’t-hide scenarios.
