Life update
It occurs to me that the purpose of this blog was meant to be twofold: both a soapbox for my rambling and also a way to keep folks up to date on my life. I have not put much time into the latter. So, I thought I would briefly do that now.
There is not a whole lot to report. I recently took a trip home to Minnesota. My girlfriend tagged along for the first couple days. She is from DC and I had the delightful experience of introducing her to Scando-Minnesotan culture. (I just made that word up. Scandinavian Minnesotan sounded weird). I took her down and proudly showed her Nordicfest in lovely Decorah, Iowa. We unfortunately missed many of the festivities, but she did get to enjoy the smörgåsbord: lefse, sausage wrapped in lefse, porkchop on a stick, and lingonberry smoothies. We also ate something I had never heard of, the name escapes me, but it was essentially butter and melted sugar and cinnamon. (Rotenborgin…sttatt?)
I made it up to camp during the latter half of the week. As usual, being in the Northwoods was good for my soul—something about the air.
Uncle George from San Francisco was in town. Got to spend some time at the cabin, which was equally good for my soul.
Things are good with my garden. I am finally beginning to harvest the things I have grown, which is extremely satisfying. This will sound weird, but sometimes after I pick a vegetable, I just look at it and revel in the fact that I nurtured it to life. And then I eat it. And it is good.
Work is fine. There is not much else to say. I am organizing a workshop this week to inform community members about proposed changes to the Zoning Code. No matter how I run from the family trade, it haunts me.
I have just over three months left and I am very torn on what to do next. I miss my friends and family in MN. However, I have made quite a life for myself out here in Balmer. It would be hard to part with it so soon. Then again, I miss traveling and there is so much of the world that I have not seen.
Yeah. Head in the clouds. Same as always…..
